Living History Walking Tours

The history of Casper, Wyoming comes to life with living history tours conducted by Painted Past Productions. you can step back in time to the 1890's or the "Roaring" 1920's or hear the stories of the immigrants coming through Casper on our Fort Tour. You may meet some friendly ghosts or spoky spirits along the Friendly Ghost Tour, a candlelight walking tour of downtown Casper. Or you can learn the stories of other people of Casper's past during the annual Cemetery Tour.

All of the characters encountered on these engaging, educational tours are entertaining, costume-clad actors, depicting real people who walked the streets and shot up the town. Step back in time to learn, laugh and get a peek at Casper's past. New characters will be added to the tours this year, so if you've seen us before, it's going to be brand new!

Most walking tours start promptly at 8:00pm. The tours are an easy walk, just 6-8 blocks long. There is a limit of 20 people per tour, so please make reservations as soon as possible. There are no restrooms on the tours so please plan accordingly. All tours are $25 per person with a $5 discount being given to children under 10 years old and seniors over 65 years old. 1890's Tour

July 8th and July 29th at 8pm

The town drunk and Casper's first librarian on our 1890's tour.Step into Casper Wyoming's colorful history. Take the guided walking tour of downtown Casper and let costumed guides and characters bring history to life! See sites in downtown Casper where cowboys, prostitutes and outlaws cut a wide swath in Central Wyoming's pioneer days. Let us take you to the spot where Billy Milne was met by jealous husband Joel Hurt, and listen to the detail of Dr. Joe Benson's escapades in the first Casper jail. Hear the grim details of how town marshall Bill Hodge shot down a local cowboy in the middle of Center Street!

Sand Bar Tour

July 15th and Aug 5th at 8pm.

Bob David, vigilante, on the 1920's Sandbar TourThe Sand Bar Area in northwest downtown Casper has a very colorful past. The "Sand Bar" was created where the Platte River was diverted by the construction of Pathfinder Dam in 1909, leaving a sandy river bottom to be settled by oil field hands, new businesses, "painted ladies, tinhorn gamblers, bootleggers and criminals on the lam." This tour will introduce you to the characters and the stories that made Casper famous in the 1920's and 1930's, be it bootleggers, ladies of the night or vigilantees!

Ghost Tour

July 22nd and Aug 12th at 8pm.

Painted Past will take you down Casper's alleys, visit haunted restaurants, and the first Fire House for more tales. Each stop will enthrall you with creepy stories of the unknown. Please bring your camera, and take pictures. You will be entertained by the haunting tales of Casper the Friendly Ghost's Tour!

Fort Caspar Emigrant Tour

July 7th and July 21st at 4pm.

Caspar Collins, the man for whom the Fort and eventually the city was named.

This tour takes you through historic Fort Caspar and highlights the lives of those who lived at the Fort or traveled through on their way west. All characters come directly from the emigrants own journals and you will even get to meet Caspar Collins himself! This tour also includes admission to the Fort and the Museum.

Historic Homes of Casper

July 24th, 3pm

Come learn more about some of the beautiful, historic homes of Casper! We will walk some of lovely the tree-lined streets and learn more of the history and architecture of some of Casper's special homes. Outdoors only. Limited to 20 people per tour.

Cemetary Tour

September 30th and October 1st

The Carrigens

Annually, during the fall, Painted Past has a tour of Casper's Highland Cemetery. Included during the tour is information on headstone symbols, living history characters describing the lives of some of Casper's finest at their headstone, along with stories from the cemetery personnel. The tour in no way is disrespectful of any property of the cemetery or personal items. The tour is led by a Painted Past Tour guide, stays on the walking paths and is escorted by cemetery personnel.

The tour is different every year. Reservations are required by calling 307-267-7243.

Ticket Prices

Most tours are $25 per person with a $5 discount given to children under 10 years old and seniors over 65 years old.

The Timeline Tour is $40 and includes both the 1890's and 1920's tours. No discounts.

The Fort Tour does include entrance into the Fort and the Museum.

If you wish to purchase tickets for each of the tours a discount will be given as well. Get tickets for all 5 summer tours (1890's, 1920's, Fort, Ghost and Home) for only $100.
